Beaumont Jackals River Pinotage 2018

Although the Beaumont winery is best known for its vibrant and full-bodied white wines made from Chenin Blanc, it also produces limited quantities of red wines from Pinotage. This grape was actually the first wine made at Beaumont, and the bottling is a stunning example of the prevailing cool climate. The grapes are sourced from 45-year-old vines and vinified in concrete vats. They are then aged in oak barrels for 18 months to soften the notoriously firm tannins of Pinotage.

The result is a well-built, intensely fruity red wine with abundant dark berry and cherry character that lingers on the tongue. The structure, fine balance and subtle freshness of this wine make it an excellent companion to red meats and it will continue to evolve and develop as it is aged over the next decade.
